How To Be A Healthier You in 2017
Every Lenten season, many religious go on a sacrifice and observe a tradition of prayer, reflection, avoidance of meat and fasting. For some health-conscious individuals, refraining from taking food and drinks (fasting) is on a regular basis, even when it is not the Holy Week.
For all the wear and tear during our everyday grind, the polluted environment and the abuse we subject it to, we owe it to ourselves to endeavor to keep our bodies in the pink of health.
We do our rituals in spas, have massages, check ups, external efforts- but most important is what goes internally. And this is where healthy, nutritious, "living" food plus regular detox comes in.
Sometimes, people only take this "healthy" route when they become riddled with chronic diseases, but this should really be a matter of preventive measure, or a lifestyle choice even.
Last February 4, 2017, I was able to attend the talk Healthier You in 2017 held in Healthy Eats Organic Store and Cafe (formerly Sugarleaf Makati, which opened last November 2011). Healthy Eats is envisioned to be a resource for all those on different stages of their health and wellness.
We had a taste of various nutritious foods and drinks and most of all, we were armed with knowledge about this subject of prime importance.
Aside from holding classes / workshops on raw food preparation, the speaker also offers yoga and pilates.
Surprise! A pleasant effect of consumption of RAW foods and detox, as testified by a senior citizen attendee, is the greying of her hair was reversed- it turned jet black again! As for the lecturer, her hair became darker!
The afternoon covers a subject that I am most interested with (i.e., raw food and various detox methods), and I took home many new learnings, complete with printed handouts. Take for instance these tips:
Whole wheat bread topped with Chef Sonia's All Natural Raw Love Pili Butter. Raw, Vegan, Gluten Free.
Brewed coffee, um I kinda forgot but I think it's kamote chips and banana bread.
The event was in partnership with Vitamix. Vitamix is more than your average blender. It's like having 16 machines in 1!
Vitamix is the choice of top brands like Starbucks, Jamba Juice, Razon's, McDonald's USA, among others. It's available in Rustan's and direct sellers like here in Healthy Eats.
Demo on how to use the Spiralizer (making zucchini noodles).
Here are some concoctions from Vitamix! These are helpful ideas but you can be creative and make your own!
1. Smoothie. Combine saba (banana), pineapple, kamote (sweet potato) top, salt. First sensation was that it tasted sweet then later on, it gave a refreshing feeling.
2. Top: Soup made with red bell pepper, pre-soaked cashews, veggie stock, salt and pepper. Savory, warm and comforting!
3. Bottom: Sorbet made of saba, Iranian date and agave. Yummers!
4. Pasta and pesto sauce. That noodles is actually zucchini, then sauce is made by blending basil, cashew, olive oil, garlic, salt and pepper. Wow! I never thought it would be so easy- it's all made from scratch, NO artificial ingredients or preservatives!
After that day, I was convinced more than ever that God-given wholesome, nutritious, raw and unprocessed food (those that don't come from a factory) is simply the best for your body, and that healthy can be delicious!

The afternoon covers a subject that I am most interested with (i.e., raw food and various detox methods), and I took home many new learnings, complete with printed handouts. Take for instance these tips:
- Choose regular sea salt (especially coming from Mindoro or Pangasinan) and avoid iodized salt.
- Smoothies or juicing? The main difference is the fiber is removed in the latter!
- Dry fasting is when you do not eat or drink anything for 24 hours! The idea is that virus and bacteria on our body thrive on moist, and they will die without water! A tip that can help you through it is eat and drink in the morning, then the next time will be the morning of the following day.
