Ambie Abaño's First Galleria Duemila Solo Exhibition
Hello po! Frens, being an early bird for the 4 PM opening reception of "...in the constant rain..." last July 20, 2019 granted me the privacy to bask in the works of art inside the room without the crowd that was to come. Moreover, I had the pleasure that the artist herself, Ambie Abaño, toured me. She expounded on the process of how she came up with the art pieces, how the wood was upcycled from a demolished house and also answered my queries...
Ambie Abaño, in her pursuit to understanding the self, probes into the essence of the 'Self', detached from the context of time.
In her "...in the constant rain..." exhibition, the artist tackles this subject with a body of work in explorative woodcut prints, large format engraved wood, and installation.
In 1986, Ma. Victoria "Ambie" Reyes Abaño started painting and exhibiting. The year after, she won Grand Prize in the Painting Category of the Art Association of the Philippines Open Art Competition.
Then in 1998, she began to create prints at the workshop of the Philippine Association of Printmakers at the CCP Complex where she continues to work, conduct workshops, and actively participate in the printmaking projects.
By 2006, her explorative print won the Grand Prize in the Philip Morris Art Awards. And in 2017, her woodcut was among the 'Winning Works' at the Hida-Takayama International Woodblock Prints Triennale in Japan.
As the first recipient of the Alliance Francaise de Manille - Philippine Artist Residency Program, she went on a 3 month artist residency at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris in 2011 while also attending printmaking workshops at La Taille-Douce.
2012 sees her as a grantee of the Asian Cultural Council, where she spent a 6 month artist residency in New York- at the International Studio and Curatorial Program- for 3 months, and attending workshops at the Robert Blackburn Printmaking Workshop.
Throughout her practice, she has mounted 23 solo exhibitions and participated in over a hundred group shows here in the Philippines and abroad.
I appreciate art. Art has its more practical purposes like in illustrations or guides. Art also has the power to stir emotions, convey deep messages, and is also a form of self-expression. Such is the reason I had taken up Fine Arts for a while.

'Self is constant. Self transcends time.'

Galleria Duemila is owned by the family of the charming actor turned social entrepreneur Illac Diaz. The Philippines' longest running commercial art gallery was established in 1975 by his Italian-born mom, Silvana Ancellotti-Diaz.
This is her, past, present, future. All talking to self in different times...
