Happy 80th Birthday Chan Lim!!!
Hello po!
Last January 15, 2017 was my second time to attend a Chan Lim Art Exhibit Grand Launch. My first one was held in the same mall last year. You may read about it HERE.
Last 2016, we admired artworks on lanterns, this time the medium is porcelain plates and scrolls. This year's exhibit is bigger, with more than 300 displays by 43 talented artists.
The program started with a calligraphy workshop.
Wow! How lucky is our table that the Master himself would drop by to teach us. He looks very serious as he is drawing a plum.
Dr. Alex Chan Lim showed us his painting talent. He made it look super easy. This is an orchid.
This is a landscape painting. Dr. Alex Chan Lim worked quite fast during the live demo, otherwise, as he said, the audience would get bored. He also advised that if you make a mistake, let it be since nobody noticed too- you see, there was no prior pencil sketch and he just imagined in his mind.
There were also video presentations from his loved ones. Setting up this art exhibit had taken a lot of resources and a year of planning. This is the family's way of giving back to the community. And they will continue to do this for as long as there are people supporting this endeavour.
A very auspicious milestone in Chinese culture indeed, because this 2017, Ang Kong Chan Lim is celebrating his 80th birthday ALL year long! All of the eight exhibits will be specially themed to celebrate this felicitous family event!
Then there were speeches from the officials and Chan Lim family members.
A very good family friend of theirs, Robin Padilla, made a surprise appearance as a gesture of his support. He had been gracing Chan Lim events for 3 years now. They had only nice words to say about "The Bad Boy of Philippine Cinema", whom they said is very humble and helpful too.
Idol Binoy gamely had his picture taken with everyone. He was even the one who held the camera. Of course, kunin ko na ang opportunity! Thanks Rizza G. for capturing! My other shot is in my FB.
Chan Lim is awarded Chan Lim @ 80 Commemorative Coin by SM, represented by SMNE Operations Manager Jocelyn Lapid.
Chinese cultural dances by award winning dance troupe Sindaw Philippines Performing Arts Guild.
We were regaled by the very lively and energetic Dragon and Lion dance, and finally came the Ribbon Cutting to formally open the Chan Lim Exhibit.
Let us visit some of the art works while learning more about Chan Lim Family of Artists.
The Chan Lim Family of Artists have been engaged in the arts for almost half a century. Presently, there are 3 generations of Chan Lim artists utilizing a wide variety of media, styles and techniques infusing Western techniques into traditional Eastern Art.
The Chan Lim family is actively involved in the arts, developing and promoting Chinese brush painting locally and abroad. They also support a number of charitable organizations with special focus on environmental sustainability.
The passion of Chan Lim, the family patriarch, lies in Oil and Watercolor. While most of his art are painted on canvas, he has also ventured on to porcelain plates, Asian lanterns and fans.
The Chan Lim siblings Alex, Felix, Rolex and Jolex are all engineers by profession and are currently engaged in leadership positions with multinational companies.
Bound by their passion for the arts, the Chan Lim family has conducted numerous art classes, workshops, seminar, on-the-spot painting demonstrations; joining several art exhibits both national and international.
The elder Chan Lims were successful in nurturing and honing the artistic talents of the younger brood. They enjoy experimenting with different types of media, incorporating modern digital technology.
The Chan Lim family is one of the few remaining notable, and well sought-after, Chinese brush painting artists in the country today. Their masterpieces could be found in private collections in the Philippines and in other countries.
Art classes are conducted in the family's art studio in Pasig. You may e-mail them at chanlim@yahoo.com or view their artworks at www.chanlim.com.
In this day and age of instant portraits thru various apps and filters, phonography and what have you's, it is important to keep art appreciation for historical style and discipline. We must never forget the past and what we learned from it. After all, a thing of beauty is always a classic, it never goes out of style.
Thanks for reading and I know some of you have already witnessed the majestic Chan Lim exhibit, for those who have not, don't forget to visit the Chan Lim exhibit as this is special- the only exhibit in Metro Manila this year! It will run from January 15 to February 12 at SM North EDSA The Block Atrium! Have a prosperous new year! :)
