What's The Best Food For Your Dog or Cat?

Is catfood or dogfood the best for your pet? Commercial df/cf are popular these days. They come in
either wet: meat chunks and jello in pouch, can or cup, or dry: kibbles or pellets in sacks or packs/sachets.

They are in high demand simply because they are convenient, effortless (no tedious preparation), cheap, nutritious and lasts a looong time.

Is catfood or dogfood the best for your pet

There are a myriad of brands but they are not all created equal.

There are premium, better quality, grain-free, which are much more expensive, and on the other hand, there are cheap ones. We have become accustomed to them that we think it is their REAL food.

But I do wonder, what had the animals been eating for centuries, before these cf/df were manufactured, and were they less sickly before?

Joining various  Animal Welfare groups, I become aware of a number of skin allergies, cancer, infections, kidney problem, degeneration cases and often the suspect was this or that certain brand of cf/df their cats or dogs had been eating.

OWN EXPERIENCE

We have a lot of rescues; much more than a dozen. Back then, we did not think much about df/cf, trusting that they were good food. We have been taking care of them in Bulacan, Tondo and Caloocan.

Those in Tondo and Caloocan that were fed table food were generally healthier. While those who were stuck with kibbles in Blulacan, some of them got very sick, and I can observe that their teeth has tartar, yellowish stains. I have adopted a senior cat in Caloocan who grew old on table food, on the few occasions I feed her kibble, she would immediately drink A LOT of water. Kibble seems to have a dehydrating effect.

On my trips to relatives in different provinces, I meet their bantay and muning. Their pets grow to be very old with no apparent illness! Guess what they eat? Yup, natural food!

WHICH TO FOLLOW?

My common sense which tells me that these PROCESSED cf and df are like junkfood, chips, instant noodles fortified with vitamins OR those multi-million dollar companies, pushing and selling their products, brainwashing people with their fancy ads.

Just because of a study or trial that say these processed df/cf is the ideal for your pet, the results do not mean it's an absolute 100% accurate, true or safe. After many years, numerous real life experience, and further research some so-called "facts" were proven wrong. Besides who makes these claims? Humans. No human is perfect. Humans are prone to mistakes!

Some warning signs also include scandalous pet food recalls, plus the fact that there on the label is written- not fit for human consumption- so it is scary to put it in your pet's mouth! They are not even regulated!

Besides, seeing pet food / poultry supply chains selling big sacks of df and cf outside their store exposed to dust and dirt, flies, and under direct sunlight is pretty disturbing. I recently gathered that there were some furparents shocked to find maggots in the unopened df/cf! To think one was bought from a big name, air-conditioned pet chain!

WHY PUSH COMMERCIALLY MANUFACTURED CF/DF?

Perhaps because that it is what was being taught in vet schools.

Anyway I have a vet source. I found out that these companies give Sponsorships, Christmas party, gifts, freebies, seminars etc. Besides, I worked in pharmaceutical companies. I know for a fact that even human doctors are "gifted" FREE prescription pads, dine out in luxurious hotels, out of country trips, buy their departmental equipments/needs, car servicing etc.

Having met different vets in emergency situations during rescues, it was pretty sad that not all of them were compassionate, some are in it just for money! Others become jaded with so many cases, and those that took up the course to take care of their farm animals.

MUST WATCH!

But perhaps the biggest indicator the dogs and cats don't need the stuff that's like your breakfast cereal is the fact they have canine teeth - they have "fangs." They are CARNIVORES who NEED meat!!!

Or else disregard everything I said since I am no medical professional but listen to this good holistic veterinarian and expert-

The Worst Myth in the Industry- Kibble is Healthy
Contrary to this popular myth, switching from kibble to fresh food is actually better for your pet’s overall well-being.

MY TWO CENTS

If being busy or budget is a constraint, df/cf may be okay once a week, or  as last resort... Instead of short cuts, prepare hearty meals for these loved ones- meat and veggies. I rotate among ground beef, chicken breast, pork liver, medium fish, etc. and mix them with vegetables. Also rice for dogs (I notice cats have a tendency to get LBM when given rice).

If nutritional value is a concern then you may supplement with vitamins and boost their immune system by making them happy- play and exercise time!

There is no ulterior motive behind this blog. I just want what I believe to be the TRUTH to be out there. And also to help people make informed choices.

Cats and dogs are not plain house guards or mouse catchers anymore but FAMILY. They are such pure, faithful, loving and amazing creatures. Sadly they have shorter life span than us. Let's give them the best we can! I wish to see these animals lead longer, happier, healthier lives, but of course most of all, for them to have loving families... I yearn for the day when there's no more strays!!!
